III．教学重难点
1.Enable the students to grasp the usages of such important new words and expressions, such as surround, measure, confirm, impress, rather than, manage to do sth etc. 2.Enable the students to grasp the usages some difficult and long sentences such as : The thought that they could cross the whole continent was exciting.
IV. 教学过程
Sum up the key usage by reading the examples.
1 surround vt. & vi. Be all around someone or something on every side 包围；围绕 （常用于被动语态） 如：Be surrounded by/ with E.g. The small village is surrounded by thick trees.
They surrounded the building with tanks and armoured vehicles. (他们用坦克和装甲车包围了大楼。)
Jill was sitting on the floor surrounded by boxes. 吉尔坐在地板上，周围摆满了箱子。 He loved being surrounded by familiar possessions. 他们喜欢周围都是自己熟悉的物品。
He loves to surround himself with family and friends. （他喜欢与家人和朋友在一起。） 【拓展】

surrounding adj. （only before the noun. ） the surrounding countryside. 周围的乡村
surroundings = environment

standard units.

1)chat away (talk in a friendly informal way, especialy about thing that are not important) 不停地闲谈:
They chatted away to each other. （他们俩聊个没完。） 2）chat about 闲聊…:
We chatted briefly about the weather. （我们聊了一会儿天气。） 3）chat to /chat with 和…闲聊:
George was in the kitchen chatting to some friends. (乔治在厨房里和一些朋友聊天。) she chatted to her mother on the phone every day. (她每天打电话和母亲闲聊。) I spent a happy half-hour chatting with a friend. 我和一个朋友愉快地聊了半个小时。
4.aboard : 1）on or into (a ship, aircraft, train, or other vehicle)[as adv.] 在船（或飞机、火车或其他交通工具）上，在…上 welcome aboard, sir. （先生，欢迎登机。）
The conductors jumped aboard, and off the train went. （列车员跳上车厢, 火车开走了。）

4）settle down to sth./doing sth 专心做某事／专心于
I can't settle down to anything at present. （目前，我做什么都安不下心来。） He found it hard to settle down to his work.专心于他的工作。

6．within （inside something) prep. 在。。。之内， 不越出
Get the criminal within sight and keep him within sight. （把那个罪犯监视起来，要一直监视着他。）
He arrived within minutes of the call being made.打电话后几分钟内他就到了。（不出某段时间）
Two sports meeting were held within (the space of) a year. 在以年的时间内举行了两次运动会）
