So ended my story. I scanned the sixty faces in my economics class at UNLV. No one seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them.

The following are some tips for becoming a successful businessman by Michael Bloomberg. They are based on his experience of building a company from the ground up, leading New York City as mayor, and so on. Take Risks

Life is too short to spend your time avoiding failure.

In 1981, at the age of 39, I was fired(解雇) from the only full-time job. The next day I took a big risk and began my own company. In 2001, when I was debating whether to run for mayor, most people advised me not to do it. But one person said, “If you can imagine yourself giving a concession speech, then why not go for it?” That was the best advice I received, and I followed it.

In order to succeed, you must first be willing to fail— and you must have the courage to go for it anyway.

Make your own luck

Luck plays a part in success, but the harder you work, the luckier you get.

Whatever you choose to do, even if it’s not the job of your dreams, always work hard at it. Be the first person at work in the morning and the last to leave at night. Hard work creates chances. Never stop learning

The most powerful word in English language is “why”. There is nothing so powerful as an open, inquiring mind(探究精神). Whatever field you choose for starting a business — be a lifelong student. Give back

You are responsible for your success and failure, but you only succeed if you share the reward with others.

My first donation was a $ 5 check to my alma mater (母校). And while the checks may be bigger today, they come with the same spirit.

You don’t have to be wealthy to give back. You can give back by getting involved and giving your time and talents.

It’s very important for everyone to have a good friend. Many people don’t know how to find the true friends, e 46 for a quiet girl. Maybe it seems a bit difficult for her to make friends.

In fact, there is no right way or wrong way to choose your friends. It helps if they like the same things you do, if you find them e 47 to talk to and you think they are smart and interesting. B 48 sometimes most of them do not have these qualities. So I think trust is very important when you make friends.

Whether you are a quiet person or a l 49 person probably depends on how you are feeling at the time. If you are at a party, you will probably be lively and you will attract people a 50 you. However, at the end of the evening when everyone goes home, you may find y 51 alone. I don’t

think being either lively or quiet really has much effect on whether you will have friends or not.

It’s nice to have lots of friends. When people like us, it makes us feel good. However, I think there are t 52 types of friends. Some are called “fair-weather friends” in English. Their friendship may even l 53 for a while but when things go wrong and you need help, they are suddenly not there any more. The other kind of friends may be s 54 you can trust with your secrets. He or she will be there to help you any time you need. To this kind of friends, you probably don’t see every day but you can t 55 them completely.

In a word, we usually only have one or two of these friends in our lives but they are precious. 六、任务型阅读。(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分) (A)

A young girl sits at her desk, reviewing her homework for the evening. English: Read three chapters and write a report. Math: Complete 30 problems. Science: Do a worksheet, front and back. French: Study new words for tomorrow’s test. It’s going to be a long night.

This happens to students in America. Now it’s time to start a homework revolution(变革). According to the National Education Association, a student should be assigned (布置) no more than 10 minutes per grade level per night. For example, a first grader should only have 10 minutes of homework, a second-grader, 20 minutes, and so on. This means that a student in my grade—seventh—should have no more than 70 minutes of work each night. Yet this is often doubled, sometimes even worse!

It’s no good giving students too much homework. According to research, kids are developing more illness at school, such as stomachaches, headaches and sleep problems than before.

Some teachers assign more homework, but they are not the only ones to blame. “Many teachers are under greater pressure(压力) than ever before,” says Kylene Beers, President of the National Council for teachers of English, “Some of it comes from parents, some from the wish for high scores on tests.” Teachers who are under pressure feel the need to assign more homework.

Some people have different ideas, saying that homework prepares kids for doing better in high school, better in college, and getting better job in the future. But too much homework is sapping (削弱)students’ strength, curiosity, and most importantly, their love of learning, is that really what teachers
