And many Americans voluntarily devote part of their lives to serving others. An amazing number nearly half of all adults in America volunteer time every week to make their communities better by mentoring children, visiting the sick, caring for the elderly and helping with a thousand other needs and caused. This is one of the great strengths of my country. People take responsibility for helping others without being told, motivated by their good hearts and often by their faith.

The new China your generation is building will need the profound wisdom of your traditions. The lure of materialism challenges society in our country and in many successful countries. Your ancient ethic of personal and family responsibility will serve you well.

Behind China’s economic success today are talented, energetic people. In the near future, these same men and women will play a full and active role in your government. This university is not simply turning out specialists, it is preparing citizens. And citizens are not spectators in the affairs of their country. They are participants in its future.

Change is coming. China is already having secret ballot and competitive elections at the local level. Nearly twenty years ago, Deng Xiaoping said that China would eventually expand democratic elections all the way to the national level and I look forward to that day.

All of these changes will lead to a stronger, more confident China, a China that can astonish and enrich the world, a China that your generation will help create. This is one of the most exciting times in the history of your country, a time when even the grandest hopes seem within your reach.

Unit3 Section1

Hi, I will have a trip to Shanghai next week. I’ve heard it is a beautiful city in China, isn’t it?

I am told that Shanghai was formerly an unimportant fishing village. But now it has grown into one of the world’s largest seaports and a major industrial and commercial center of China. Amazing changes! Would you please tell me more about it?

OK, You know, Shanghai first opened to the outside world in the 19th century as a result of the expansion of foreign nations and, more recently, has reopened to the outside world since 1980’s. Now, Shanghai has become China’s most energetic and cosmopolitan city. It has attracted immigrants from China as well as abroad. Its residents are known for their business talents, quick wit, and sophistication. A tourist city, Shanghai attracts travellers from home and abroad both because of its commercial activity and its scenic beauty.

I read from one tourist information guide that, as you walk through Shanghai, you may feel as though you are entering a fair of world architecture or an art gallery of human civilization. Do you think the words are an exaggeration?

Oh, I don’t think they are an exaggeration. In fact, Shanghai is unique among world cities in its variety of architectural styles. This variety reflects the wisdom and efforts of architects, engineers, and workers-both foreign and domestic-and is a precious legacy to the world.

I see. Would you recommend some scenic spots worth visiting in Shanghai?

Sure, first, I’d like to recommend you the Bund. Once the most famous street in Asia, it is a tree-lined promenade along the Huangpu River. All attracted by its grandeur, many major firms of the Far East had their headquarters in the building facing the river.

The guide also suggests that I visit the Yu Garden. What do you think of it?

The Yu Garden is characteristic of the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty. It is a private garden in the southeast of shanghai, with a history of more than 400 years.

You are welcome. And there are many other places you can’t miss touring, such as the Pudong area, Shanghai Botanical Gardens, Shanghai Museum, Oriental Pearl, etc. I can’t wait to go to Shanghai. I am sure I will have a good stay in Shanghai.

Wish you a good tour in Shanghai!

If you visit only one place in South Africa, make it Cape Town. It is reputed to be South Africa’s most beautiful and most visited city. You will find Cape Town nestling below Table Mountain, which stands sentinel over the city. Few cities in the world possess its beauty and style. Even though Cape Town is relatively small, there is plenty to see and do. The architecture is a mix of Dutch and English colonial styles. Attractions include the castle of Good Hope, built in the 17th Century and the District Six Museum. The city is a happy collision of many things: The Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet here, as well as vineyards, beaches and all types of Mediterranean cuisine, all cradled by Table Mountain. It is also the second-biggest city in South Africa for business, right behind Johannesburg, but infinitely better looking and more relaxed.

The city has often been likened to San Francisco, but Cape Town has what San Francisco can never have---its spectacular mountain. Table Mountain is key to Cape Town’s identity. Wherever you are, you will see the huge flat topped icon overlooking the buildings in the city. It dominates the city in a way that is difficult to imagine until you visit. In the afternoon, when creeping clouds spill over the mountain, the whole town seems to shiver and hold its breath. Depending on which side of the mountain you live, it even dictates when the sun will rise and set. Many ambitious visitors attempt to climb the mountain, but by far the most relaxing route to the top is via the cable car, which goes through a 360 degree turn on its way to the top to provide a dizzying panoramic view.

Cape Town is surprisingly small. A stroll through the lovely city center reveals vestiges of Cape Town’s three centuries. While the British and Dutch may have colonized South Africa, thankfully their influence did not make it to the food. And everywhere, whether you’re eating outdoors at one of the country’s best restaurants or sipping wine atop. Table Mountain, you sense---correctly---that this is South Africa’s most urbane, civilized city. Modern South Africa was born here, and today it is a meeting plan for Africa and the rest of the world, which gives its own particular vibrancy.

Cape Town is home to the country’s best museums, restaurants, and hotels. The diverse cultural heritage is evident when one visits the various national museums and sights such as the Castle Good Hope, dating back to the Dutch East Indies Company, the South African Cultural History Museum, the District 6 Museum.

Unit4

Bravo! Though I know little about the background of the play, speaking from an artistic angle, the choreography, stage scenery, lighting and music are just fabulous. In particular, the young dancers’ performance was wonderful.

Thanks. As a gift presented by the National Ballet of China to the Chinese Culture Year, the classical ballet The Red Detachment of Women is a combination of traditional Chinese dance and the cream of classical European ballet. You’ve taken the words out of my mouth! Just as the director of a local opera house commented, the ballet is China’s Giselle. Speaking of the Chinese Culture Year, could you enlighten me a little?

The Chinese Culture Year is part of the activities initiated the year before last by the leaders of our two countries to celebrate the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and your country. This year as planned, the two countries have inaugurated respectively a series of cultural exchange activities. More than 200 projects are involved, covering fields such as art and literature, education, science and technology, sports, folklore and tourism. This event marks the largest-ever cultural-exchange activity jointly hosted by China and a foreign country.

You know I am a cultural vulture. Anything foreign instantly arouses my interest. Could you recommend some events that I might go to?

You bet! But with so many activities, where should I begin? From these , you can get a certain sense of the enduring charm of china’s ancient cultural achievements and its creative vigor of modern times .

Thanks for your information. As the saying goes, what is national also belongs to the world, more and more people across the world are getting hooked up to the Chinese culture. And I hear the Chinese government is sparing no efforts in protecting its cultural heritage.

Really amazing! I won’t miss such Chinese cultural extravaganza on my doorstep. And I believe activities like these will surely help promote the understanding and friendship between our two peoples. Section 2

Welcome to the British Museum. Before we start our tour, I’d like to brief you on the history of this world-renowned treasure house of knowledge.

The origins of the british museum lie in the collection of sir hans sloane 1660-1753, an eminent physician and naturalist . Sloane bequeathed his museum of 80,000 objects, his herbarium and library of George II For the brithish nation in return for payment of $20,000 to his daughters .by the british museum act of 1753, parliament provided for funds to be raised by public plotter on 15 january, 1759, the british museum opend to the public . with the of two world wars, when parts of the collection were evacuated , it has remained open ever since, gradually incteasing its opning hours and moving from an attendance of perhaps 5, 000 a year to more than 5 million today .

From its beginnings the British Museum was a new type of institution. Governed by a body of Trustees responsible to Parliament, its collections belonged to the nation, and admissions were free and open to all. Entry was directed to be given to all studious and curious persons and throughout the Museum’s history public enjoyment has been linked with scholarship and education. From the first a Reading Room was provided in which readers could consult the library and learned staff were engaged to curate and catalogue the collections.

The foundation collections largely consisted of books, manuscripts and natural history with some antiquities and ethnography. The museum was first housed in a 17th-century mansion which was quickly outgrown by the rapidly expanding collections. In 1823 the gift to the nation by George IV of his father’s substantial library (the King’s Library) provided the catalyst for the construction of the present neo-classical building designed by Sir Robert Smirke. The first phase was largely completed in 1852, followed in 1957 by the round Reading Room, erected in Smirke’s central courtyard.

The 19th century was a time of popular expansion and, particularly on public holidays, the Museum attracted great crowds of all ages and backgrounds. While the scholarly work continued with the publication of the Museum’s great series of learned catalogues, many curators took an interest in broadening the Museum’s appeal through lectures and improved display. The first popular synopsis(guide)to the collections was published in 1808.

How do you do, Mr. Smith? My name is Zhang Feng from Shanghai Technical Import Corp. Though it is the first time for us to meet here, we are already old friends. I have been very familiar with your name in the past business correspondence. I have long expected to see you.

This is my first visit to the metropolis of Shanghai and I am deeply impressed by what I see here.

You have been here for quite several days, I suppose. What scenic spots have you visited here? Yes, I’ve been round the city, and seen some famous historical spots. I enjoyed the visits very much.

I’m glad that you like our city. What good news have you got for us on the payment?

Well, I think we have explained to you in our correspondence why we could not accept your proposal. As you know, the complete set of equipment you intend to buy from us will involve in the whole factory equipment including the necessary accessories and parts. It is time and money consuming to manufacture all these. All in all, it involves a tremendous sum of money which is beyond our means.

Mr. Smiths, it’s sure that the complete plant we intend to buy is not small, but I’m afraid you are too reserved when you say it is beyond your financial capacity. Your company is one of the largest and most famous multinationals in the world, having 40 branches in more than 20 countries. So, it is nothing for you to finance the manufacturing of the complete plant.

But, Mr. Zhang, you should understand that a branch of the multinational does not mean the company itself. Each branch is independent with regard to finance and accounting. Of course, this does not mean there is no mutual help between the head office and the branches. However, any of our plans must be approved by the board of directors of the multinational before it is put into practice.

I can understand that the branches of a multinational are independent in their financing and accounting. In China, we have a lot of associated enterprises. Though they are of socialist ownership, each unit within the associated enterprise is independent in finance and is responsible for its own financial gains or losses. We know the condition of your branch. It is out of question for you to manufacture the complete plant that we intend to buy. Whatever,

7 / 10

with regard to the finance, you may get help from the head office whenever necessary. I’m sure that the board of the directors, when they told that you are doing business with China, will give favorable consideration to providing your financial help.

Oh, I agree on the point. But you see, even if our head office gives us any financial aid, interest has to be paid just the same as a loan from a commercial bank. In that sense, our own money would be tied up in your plant while we had to pay interest to the head office for the money borrowed from them.

Mr. Smith, I would like to remind you that we took into consideration the factor of deferred payment when we cabled you our acceptance of your final offer that means the present price agreed upon by our two parties is a bit higher than that for the normal payment terms .

But we did not expect the payment to be effected after actually receiving the shipment. It’s even more unfavorable to us than the D/P terms, and besides, we haven’t any banker’s guarantee.

As to the guarantee of a bank, we may ask Bank of China for help. Do you have any specific proposal now?

Yes. I propose that payment be made by installments, that is, after each shipment we will send you the Bs/L and other necessary documents through our bank and yours---Bank of China. As long as the documents are in order you should effect payment without delay. To ensure the payment, Bank of China should give us a written letter to the effect that they will guarantee for the whole transaction, or give separate letters of guarantee for separate installments. Either way, the letter of guarantee should reach us two months before shipment is due, as stipulated in the contract.

Your proposal seems to be acceptable, but I cannot promise you anything now. I have to report to our general manager. We will hold a discussion on this issue within our company and consult it with Bank of China. Shall we meet again here next Friday when we can give you the complete scheme?

OK. I am looking forward to your favorable reply. Now it is one o’clock in the afternoon. I would like to invite you to a lunch if you don’t mind. Alright, let’s go. Thank you for your invitation.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Good morning! I’m glad to be here, and honored to be giving this keynote address. By posing the question, “What’s new and what’s next in implementing business solutions,” the conference organizers are, in some way, suggesting that we are at a crossroads.

I would tend to agree that over the past few years we’ve come a long way, and there are now some very specific things that we must accomplish to fully tap the potential of e-business. I’d like to continue challenging each of us to use what we’ve learned, and to recognize that for many components of e-business, we can’t go it alone.” We must act as an industry.

You’ll hear it said more than once during this two-day event: E-business in the chemical industry is coming of age. E-business is making us more effective and competitive---it’s making us rethink how we work with customers and each other.

But there’s still a long way to go. And in many respects, the technology is the easy part.

E-business is just the latest chapter in the IT “revolution.” And, like virtually every field of technology in history, the full force of its impact will not be felt until the technology is used by ordinary people. Not the early adopters, not the experimenters, but the majority of people. And that’s true with each generation of technology—from the printing press to the telegraph, to radio, to television and to the Internet.

It’s up to us to make e-business both relevant and sensible to our colleagues, our employee suppliers, customers and everyone else we do business with. Only then will we make the leap in perception. And we must make the leap to firmly engrain e-business into the production and sale of chemicals and plastics.
