On March 30, the middle school student from the United States made another amazing project again. She opened a Free Little Library in Oakland University with her Girl Scout friend Megan MacKenzie.

Haley came up with the idea after reading a piece of news. In Detroit, US, people make Free Little Libraries for kids who don’t have enough money to buy books.

Megan is proud of their project. She told the Oakland Post, “I like the idea because I never got to read so much when I was a kid. And it really encourages reading, so hopefully kids can grow up with a really big vocabulary and get more interested inreading.”

When I walk down the street in Beijing during the summer, I often find it quite difficult to get where I’m going. Why? Because of all the umbrellas in my way.

Before I came to China, I’d never seen people carrying umbrellas on sunny days. But in China, women carry umbrellas when it’s not raining. What is the purpose, I wondered?

I found that there are many reasons for this. Firstly, it protects people from the sun’s rays(光线). Many Chinese cities get hot in the summer. People sometimes carry umbrellas to stay cool. But wait a second. If umbrellas can help us stay cool, why don’t I ever see men carrying them?

That brings us to the second reason-blocking the sun helps women’s skin stay pale(白皙的). In China, pale white skin is considered to be more beautiful than tanned(晒成棕褐色的)skin. Cosmetics(化妆品)companies even sell special creams and powders(香粉)to make your skin look whiter.

Women in the US, on the other hand, actually prefer to be tan. It’s considered more beautiful there. Some people will lie outdoors in the sun for hours to get a tan. But doing this too much can be dangerous, as the sun’s rays are bad for your skin.

And as it turns out, China isn’t the only place where women carry umbrellas during the summer. Women in Greece are also known to carry umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun. So there you have it–umbrellas aren’t just for rainy days. Although I don’t think I’m going to start carrying one anytime soon.
