W: It’s actually a wonderful book, Colin. It has attracted much attention since it came out. And unlike other travel writers, you’ve managed to talk to ordinary people in their own language. How in fact did you go about learning Khalkha? Did you go to classes?

M: Yeah, for adults it helps to have some sort of talents, and being outgoing helps, too, as you won’t get far if you’re scared of making a fool of yourself. But most importantly, it’s practice that really matters.

W: While you were there you had the experience of being invited to live with a Mongolian family, didn’t you? Tell me a little about that...
