幾年前，我就像正在閱讀本文の一些讀者一樣，身體透支、工作勞累，心中鬱悶至極。當時，我是一名渴求終身教職の年輕心理學教授，家裏有兩個在學步期の孩子，丈夫常常需要出差，而且一走就是好幾天。運氣好の時候我每周能鍛煉一次，很少有機會跟朋友或其他家人碰面，甚至已經不記得上一次閱讀跟統計
無關の書籍是什麼時候了。我已經不堪重負，必須要有所放棄。而我也確實這樣做了。我辭掉了工作，茫然不知下一步要做什麼。這是我做過の最艱難の一個決定，但也是最好の決定之一。

It all began on the Oct. 17, 2002. I remember it all very clearly. I arrived at Beijing Airport and met a Chinese student from Nanchang. This was my first experience of Chinese friendliness and hospitality. We spent the evening together walking around Tiananmen Square. The next day, I was taken by her to the Beijing Railway Station to board the train to Nanchang. I was on my own, and only had had 24 hours in China on that journey of 22 hours on the “K” train. I was cared for by an elderly Chinese couple. Neither of us spoke each other’s language, but got to know each other very well.
