Background information:

Students: Junior high school students, Grade 1 Teaching contents: Festivals around the world Lesson duration: 40 mins

Teaching aims:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to 1. say in English of the festivals in and out of China;

2. answer the questions about Chinese festivals and foreign festivals; 3. talk about Chinese festivals and customs in English;

4. master the following phrases and expressions about describing the festivals in China and out of China. Useful questions as follow:

1. When is the Spring Festival/Christmas/…? 2. What do people usually do? 3. How do you celebrate it? 4. What activities are there?

5. Are you doing anything special? 6. What’s your favorite festival?

7. What is your favorite aspect of the festival? Useful expressions as follow: 1. It happens on… 2. It falls on…

3. It is celebrated on…

4. People will celebrate it…with… 5. Children will…

6. My favorite festival is… 7. I like/enjoy… 8. We are visiting… Useful phrases:

1. get together to have meals/a feast 2. eat dumplings

3. give money in red paper to children 4. set off the fireworks/firecrackers 5. offer sacrifices to one’s ancestors

6. watch the lion dance and the dragon dance

7. staying- up

8. watch the Spring Festival Gala Evening 9. give New Year’s greeting

The Important point and the difficult point:

1. The names and the customs of different festivals;

2. To describe the time and activities of different festivals.

1. Task Based Language Teaching;

Teaching aids:

The multimedia and some normal teaching tools

Teaching procedures: Step 1: Lead-in (1minute)

Teacher can catch the students’ attention by a question “what festival you have on

last Friday?” and lead to the topic: Festivals around the world.

Step 2: Presentation and talking (15 minutes)

Part 1 Chinese Festivals

(1) Teacher will play a short video about Chinese festivals and later the students

should answer the questions given before (2) New words learning

(3) Presentation of some Chinese festivals (4) Students talk about the Spring festival Part 2 Foreign Festivals

(1) Ask a question about the foreign festivals: How many foreign festivals do you know? (2) Matching

(3) Presentation of some foreign festivals (4) Students are talking about the Christmas

设计目的:通过图片展示,让学生了解国内外的节日,并通过一些问句及表达法让学生知道如何用英语去描述节日。并为下面的语言演练做准备。

Step 3: Guessing Game(7minutes)

Teacher will ask some students to guess the festivals according to the information. This part will be divided into 3 sections.

Section A: guess the festivals by some descriptions Section B: guess the festivals by listening the music Section C: guess the festivals by watching the video

设计目的:通过游戏的手段,让学生加深节日的印象以及表达法。并能让学生自主的通过翻译相关节日的句子找出节日名称,提高学生的翻译以及猜测能力,并为下面的对话操练做语言铺垫。

Step4: Speaking (15minutes)

Ask the students to discuss with partner to make a dialogue about the festivals, and the dialogue should include the following questions: (1) When is the festival?

(2) What do people usually do at the festival? Useful questions as follow:

1. When is the Spring Festival/Christmas/…? 2. What do people usually do? 3. How do you celebrate it? 4. What activities are there?

5. Are you doing anything special? 6. What’s your favorite festival?

7. What is your favorite aspect of the festival? Useful expressions as follow: 1. It happens on… 2. It falls on…

设计目的:考察学生的语言运用能力,鼓励学生学以致用。并且提供更多相关的句型,进一步训练学生的语言运用能力,学会用英语去表达不同国家的节日。

Step 5: Summary (1minute)

Review some festivals in China and in foreign countries.

Step6: Homework (1minute)

1. Recite the festivals both in and out of China. 2. Write a short passage about the festival you like. 3. Preview the reading, “Festivals and Celebrations”.
