Do you always concentrate on studying? Do you make straight A’s in your examinations? Working really hard to be a top student is a great thing, but in the United States, having fun with friends is just as important as your grades.

There are several ways to develop friendships. Usually, lots of football games happen in US high schools in fall. I don’t know anything about football but I still go to watch the game so I can be with my friends. I thought I could learn the game’s rules by asking my friends, but to my surprise, even many American students don’t know the rules clearly-they just go to the games to socialize. They cheer for the football players and have fun together.

The other common way to make new friends is to join after-school clubs. You can choose the clubs you’re interested in and then meet many like-minded people. For example, I registered for an art club last semester, which opened the door to a new world for me. I met some schoolmates who shared the same interests as me, and my painting skills improved a lot.

There are far more ways to socialize. I’ve heard that you can even meet new friends when you go trick-or-treating on Halloween. It sounds strange, but Americans do have some bold ways of doing things.

Socializing is an important thing in the US, but it doesn’t mean academic grades should be ignored. A successful student should have the ability to balance their studies and social life.
