What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you, but I am short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?

A scientific study of lying shows women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a white lie, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researches show that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lies politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the les from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.

Research has also been done into the way people's behavior changes in a number of small apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the same time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now”.

47. This passage tells us that _______.

Just a couple of hours ago, I was on the plane, ready to fly home from London. The flight had been put off by a few hours so it felt good to be so close to take-off. I had my iPad in place and a new book to read. Then, over the loudspeaker came the pilot's voice: “We are sorry to tell you we must cancel this flight because there's still something wrong with the plane.”

The passengers' reactions that announcement led to were interesting. One man close to me began to argue with an air hostess. A couple in another row complained loudly. A businessman in a black suit even kicked the seat in front of him. Yet some passengers acted differently. An elderly gentleman smiled as he helped others take their bags down from the shelf. A teenager, rather than trying to rush off the plane like most of the other passengers, stopped to help a woman with disability. I he lady sitting next to me laughed and said “Hey, it's not the end of the world,” before she made a call to her kids and shared her adventure with them.

No life is perfect; mine certainly isn't. We all must face something unexpected, both large and small. You and I have the power to choose to rise above the external circumstances(外部环境).We always have the choice to be strong and kind when we are in trouble.

My seatmate was right-things didn't get that terrible. Anyway, I am safe. I have my health. I have two wonderful children. I have work I love and so much to be grateful for. Sure I now have to wait a few hours to catch the next flight home. 52. What caused the passengers' different reactions?

A. The loudspeaker. B. The air hostess.

C. The plane's problem. D. The pilot’s announcement. 53. Who turned his anger to the seat?

A. A teenager helping the disabled B. An old man taking bags down C. A man in a black suit

D. A man close to the writer
