When l was a child in Minnesota, watermelon was expensive. One of my father's friends, Bernie, was a rich businessman. He owned a large store in St Paul. Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would take a bus to Bernie's place. We would sit on the edge of the dock(码头) and get ready for a big meal. Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we would bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart——the finest, sweetest and most seed-free(无籽的)part, and throw away the rest.

Bernie was my father's idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, however, 1 realized that it was not Bernie's wealth itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Green Hills, Clear Water, Blue Sky is a project that was set up by the government three years ago. Since it was created, many people have taken part. Its aim is to make the public aware of the importance of protecting our environment. Meanwhile, the government is expected to take measures to protect the environment.

Some factory owners have focused on increasing production in order to make more money, but they have not dealt with the problem of waste from their factories. They continue to pollute local rivers with harmful chemicals. The government should advise factory owners to cut back on production, so that they produce less waste. It will also make factories pay high taxes for polluting the environment. The government ought to pass laws to punish those who damage the environment. The government should let everybody know that it is illegal to kill or sell rare animals. Besides, the government needs to offer money to companies that recycle waste. It could also build some conservation centers to protect plants and animals that are in danger. Children with autism(自闭症) may learn much better from robots than from human teachers, according to an experiment at Topcliffe Primary School in Birmingham.

Head teacher Ian Lowe said, “The robots have no feelings, so children with autism find it easier to get in touch with the robots than with their teachers. They look like real men, and they are very cute. Children with autism are hard to communicate with when they are with adults or other children, but for some reason they can accept these robots.”

“We do different activities with the robots acting as a model for the children's behaviour. For example, memory games, which get the children to imitate(模仿) the robots’s movements, can help them become involved(参与) and encouraged in learning,” Dr Guldberg said. “It can be very difficult to get children with autism to pay attention. We are amazed to see how involved they can be when they are working with the robots.”

Doctor Guldberg added. “lf you can meet the needs of children with autism, you can meet the

needs of all children. When people feel safe and encouraged, they usually learn much better.” 58 Where was the experiment done? (回答词数不超过 10 个〉

59 What do the robots act as during the activities?(回答词数不超过 12 个〉
