Passage One

Taking pictures in fun,and taking good ones is not difficult if you follow a few simple rules. Before you snap (快拍) a picture, thinking about it, Be sure that you are close enough to subject. A pretty face against a clear background (背景),for example, makes a good picture. But a distant figure lost among trees and clouds lacks interest. In a landscape (风景)scene , try to keep at least two thirds of the picture below the line where the ground meets the sky ,for a sky- scene, keep at least two thirds of the picture above that line.

Study pictures in newspapers and books. Try to see why some are better than others. Use what you learn to improve your own pictures. 1.This passage gives us some ____. (A)、reasons for taking good pictures (B)、ideas of some funny hobbies

Passage Two

Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even

2

more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.

Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message?

Passage Three

Some people have very good memories and can easily learn quite a long paragraph by heart. But they often forget them almost as quickly as they learn them. There are other people who can only remember things when they have said them over and over, but when they do know them they don't forget them.

The human mind is rather like a camera, but it takes photographs not only of what we see but of what we feel, hear or smell. There is much to do before the photograph is finished and ready to show to our friends. In the same way, there is much work to be done before we can make a picture remain forever in the mind.

3

The water level of oceans rises and falls alternatively (交替) twice a day. This movement of water is galled the tide. Tides are caused by the pull of the sun and the moon on the earth's surface; since the moon is much closer, it affects tides more than the sun. When the moon is directly overhead, it actually pulls on the water that is below it. This causes the water level to rise because the water is pulled away from the earth. As the moon disappears over the horizon, the pull lessens and the water level settles back towards the ocean bottom.

When the water reaches its highest level, we have high tide. And when the water reaches its lowest level, we have low tide. From its lowest point, the water rises gradually for about six hours until it reaches low tide. Then the cycle begins again. 16. The water level of the oceans rises and falls ______.

A. often B. often in a year C. twice D. twice a day 17. What causes tide?

A. The pull of the sun and the moon. B. The heat of the sun. C. The shape of the moon. D. The light of the moon. 18. The water level of an ocean rises ______. A. when the moon is directly over the water B. when the moon disappears over the horizon C. when there is no tide D. when there is a low tide

19. The water level of an ocean falls ______. A. when there is a low tide

B. when the water is pulled away from the earth C. when the moon disappears over the horizon D. when water no longer moves

20. We have low tide___________________________.

A. when water reaches its highest level B. when water stops

C. when water no longer moves D. when water reaches its lowest level

Passage Five

Cars are lots of fun, but they would also be dangerous. We have to be careful when we drive them or ride in them.

It’s always a good idea to put on your seat belt when you’re in a car. Why? Think about this example: You put an egg on a skateboard(滑板)and give it a push. If the skateboard hits a stone, it will stop, but the egg won’t. It will fly through the air, hit the ground and break.

Now, think what would happen if you tied the egg to the skateboard. When the skateboard hits a stone, the egg won’t go flying. It will stay safely on the skateboard.

Volvo, a famous Swedish carmaker, was the first to use seat belts in 1949. Air bags are also very important for car safety, because sometimes a seat belt isn’t enough. If the car is going really fast and runs into something, seat belt could even hurt the people who wear them.

Most new cars have air bags in front of and next to the seats. When a car hits something, its air bags will come out quickly-in less than second-to keep the people inside safe. 21. We have to be careful in driving a car mainly because it could be ___________.

(A)、little fun (B)、a pleasure (C)、a lot of trouble (D)、a great danger 22. The example of an egg on a skateboard is used to show that ___________.
