A hot,dry desert may be the last place you’d think of to see colorful flowers. But thanks to last autumn’s above-average rainfall,California’s Death Valley National Park is experiencing a “super bloom” of wildflowers—a rare occurrence that happens just once every 10 years.

Death Valley holds the world record for hottest temperature ever recorded, and its annual rainfall is just two inches—sometimes it gets no rain at all.But this year, the park got over three inches of rain during the first two weeks in October. The above-average rainfall was enough to cause the growth of millions of wildflower seeds that have been dormant for years.

What kind of flowers can you see in the desert?

The most abundant and eye-catching wildflower is the aptly-named desert gold,a large, bright yellow bloom that looks like a daisy. The stems this year are growing to waist height, and the flowers cover entire hillsides and vast areas of the valley floor in the southern section of the park.Tourists can enjoy them in their cars.

Some of the other more common flowers include the deep purple phacelia;the desert five-spot,a delicate pink flower with five burgundy spots around its center;the gravel ghost,a delicate white flower that appears to be floating aboveground like a ghost because its stem is so thin that it’s almost invisible;and various types of desert primrose.

How long will I be able to see the wildflowers bloom?

The show won’t last forever. Most of the flowers will fade in the next few weeks as temperatures start to rise. Some flowers may be around as late as June at higher elevations, but those won’t be as easy to see from a car and could require hiking.

What part of the park has the best blooms?

Now,the best flower show is at the south end of Death Valley National Park along Badwater Road, south of Furnace Creek. As the temperature rises, those flowers will fade, and the bloom will move north and to higher elevations.

The best family vacation that I ever had was going on a road trip to Myrtle Beach. The trip was for 2 weeks during the March break from school. This trip was probably about 20 years ago so it was before the time of things like portable video games and being able to watch movies in the back seat.

So to pass the many hours of travel my brother and I had to entertain ourselves and each other. My mum would set the back seat up so that it was our own little playroom. She would pack everything up so that we had a big level area to play in.We would play cards and board games.

When it got to the point where we_were_at_each_other’s_throats we would be sent back to our own side of the seat and would be forced to either nap or read by ourselves until we could be friendly to each other again.I can remember us playing for quite some time when we turned the back seat into a spaceship and traveled around the earth.

Another time we turned it into a kitchen and had a bakeoff (食品烘烤赛).But the thing that I remember the most and that gave us many hours of enjoyment was using each other’s faces as silly Plasticine (普莱斯蒂辛橡皮泥) and making funny faces. We would see how far we could stretch each other’s mouths open, see how thin we could make the other’s eye by pulling on it.We would keep going until one of us begged for mercy because we had to give our faces a rest.

So while I can remember us having a great time on the beach, laughing a lot trying to put the tent up in the rain, what I remember the most of that trip and what always makes me smile the most is remembering the pain that our faces would be in after the trip.
