The Story about Growth is my favorite American TV play because it is very interested. The play tells humorous stories that happen in the Green’s family. With such stories it make people think about life, but therefore attracts the audience. It is also a window which we can learn about American society. And there were many meaningful things that are worth think of, such as the relationship between parents and children in a lot of American family. It is quite different from those in China. Countries may be rated by many various categories, such as how expensive or interesting they are to foreign tourists. They can also be rated by their openness and friendliness toward visitors. You might be shocked to find out that, for example, the USA is number 102 on the list of the least welcoming places, 140 being the most unfriendly land. Mongolia

Mongolia was closed for quite a long time and opened up to foreigners only 20 years ago. That's probably the major reason why it is not yet experienced enough in hosting tourists. The country is beautiful, with broad land that is low populated. The local people are not used to being visited by foreign guests. Iran

Iran is not the best place to travel to. It is located close to Pakistan with its negative political atmosphere. Western visitors are not welcome and embassies advise against travel to Iran. The people, contrary to the country’s government, are very friendly and welcome visitors. uwait

In uwait people are warm and friendly. It has a unique history, plenty of traditions and customs. It is a Muslim country, which means that you are not allowed to drink alcohol. If you happen to visit uwait during Ramadan(斋月), you will not be allowed to eat in public places, either. Russia

Russia is truly a special place. It is worth visiting it. However, one point that you might dislike is the corruption and bureaucracy(官僚主义) in some certain official circles. Another point you should be ready for is that, as a visitor, you'll be asked to receive an invitation. Only then will you be able to apply for a visa. Once you arrive in Russia, you'll be warmly greeted and accepted. (292 words)

In the distance, the tiny Welsh village of Hay-on-Wye, situated on the River Wye on the Welsh-English border, looks like any other small European town. But apart from other small towns, it’s home to 1,400 people and hundreds of thousands of books, making it the largest center for secondhand books in the entire world.

You won’t find a Barnes and Noble in Hay-on-Wye, but what you will find is over 30 charming and comfortable secondhand bookshops rich with the smell of old books. There’s a bookstore specializing in out-of-print children’s books. A shop called “Murder and Mayhem” sells mainly crime and detective literature. And one outdoor bookshop, the Hay Castle Bookshop, is built around the walls of a castle. How could a book lover possibly ask for anything more?

One of the town’s most unique features is its “honesty bookshops.” These are basically just bookshelves fitting out in the Open, without a cashier or employee to speak of. A sign announces the prices of the books which are often less than one U. S. dollar and a collection box for money sits nearby. Customers are trusted to pay on their honor. There are no security cameras or anything; just good old-fashioned trust.

Apart from being a popular tourist destination for literary fanatics throughout the entire year, Hay-on-Wye also throws a literary festival each year at the end of May. Bookworms from all over the world come to this tiny village to hear famous writers speak, attend book signings, and, of course, stock up(囤货) on reading material. And there’s plenty for the kids to read too! Here, your child grows up loving to read. (277words)

It is only praise or punishment that determines a child’s level of confidence. There are some other important ways we shape our kids---particularly by giving instructions and commands in a negative or positive choice of words. For example, we can say to a child “Don’t run into traffic!” or “Stay on the footpath close to me.” In using the latter, you will be helping your kids to think and act positively, and to feel competent in a wide range of situations, because they know what to do, and aren’t scaring themselves about what not to do.

Why does such a small thing make a difference? It is all in the way the human mind works. What we think, we automatically rehearse (预演). For example, if someone offered you a million dollars not to think of a blue monkey for two minutes, you wouldn’t be able to do it. When a child is told “Don’t fall off the tree,” he will think of two things “don’t” and “fall off the tree”. That is, he will automatically create the picture of falling off the tree in his mind. A child who is vividly imagining falling off the tree is much more likely to fall off. So it is far better to use “Hold on to the tree carefully.”

Clear, positive instructions help kids to understand the right way to do things. ids do not always know how to be safe, or how to react to the warning of the danger in negative words. So parents should make their commands positive. “Sam, hold on firm to the side of the boat” is much more useful than “Don’t you dare to fall out of the boat?” or worse still “How do you think I’ll feel if you drown?” The changes are small but the difference is obvious.

Children learn how to guide and organize themselves from the way we guide them with our words, so it pays to be positive.

8. Positive choice of words helps kids to __________.

A. do things carefully

B. build up their confidence

D. learn in different situations

C. improve their imagination

9. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A. A child will act on what is instructed B. One can’t help imagining what is heard. C. A child will fall off the tree when told not to.

D. One won’t think of a blue monkey when given money. 10. Which of the following commands helps kids to be safe?

A. Fasten your seat belt. B. Don’t play by the lake.

C. How do you think I’ll feel if you get hurt? D. Don’t you dare to walk through the red light? 11. The main idea of the passage is that __________.

A. praise makes kids confident

B. right instructions keep kids safe

C. clear commands make kids different D. choice of words can make a difference
