Four students at the University of Hefei recently proved that you don't have to spend much money on a designer dress to look amazing. You can make it yourself, for free, using only plant leaves.
Photos of the leaf dress have been popular on Chinese social media for about a week, and people still can’t stop discussing it.
The team behind the special dress-two girls and two boys-got the idea for it over six months ago, while trying to come up with an interesting project for the “Animal and Plant Specimen Contest（标本大赛）” at the University of Hefei. One of them suggested they try to create a dress out of plant leaves. About the idea, they turned to their teacher for advice, and even though he considered it difficult to finish, they went with it anyway.
After researching the best way to use plant leaves as fabric（纤维）, and coming up with a design for their dress, the four students started collecting the leaves. Some species were got at school, but others were not. They had to travel to Tianzhu Mountain to collect them.
To make sure that the collected leaves didn’t go bad, the students removed the flesh（叶肉）by boiling them in a kind of special water for about two hours. This made the flesh easier to remove,l eaving only the “bone” of the leaf, a thin film with all the veins（叶脉）left. This was much harder than it sounds. Through many experiments, and with their teacher’s help, they were able to come up with a good way to solve the problem.
The four students could only work on their special dress after classes and on weekends, so it took them nearly four months to complete. That’s a pretty long time, but it all paid off when one of the girls got to finally put on the leaf dress and show it to everyone. They posted photos of it online, and it went viral almost immediately.

Halloween used to be a time for kids. In the past, the festival meant houses decorated with jack-o-lanterns, cool costumes（戏服）handmade by moms, and going door to door asking for candy, saying “trick or treat”.
However, you wouldn’t have seen any of these if you were at this year’s Halloween events in Shibuya, Tokyo, from Oct. 27 to 30. Halloween in Japan has become a big party for adults, who dress up in costumes and hang around having fun taking pictures. In other words, this festival is no longer just a time for kids.
As USA Today editor Bruce Horovitz wrote, “Adults have slowly been stealing Halloween from kids.” But “steal” is not quite the word, since the adults of today all used to be kids themselves. These grown-ups still manage to keep the tradition of dressing up alive, however, even if they’re too old to knock on strangers’ doors for candy now.
Some companies even encourage their employees to wear costumes to work so they can relax and enjoy their share of the festival fun. “You can wear whatever you want and not be judged,” Denise Delahorne of DDB Worldwide, an advertising company, told Forbes when asked why adults are so into Halloween compared to other holidays. “There’s no pressure（压力）to it. You don’t have to travel or deal with relatives. There’s not the holiday pressure to find a date if you are single.”
But here comes the interesting part: As the “adult Halloween” industry gets bigger and bigger, movie theaters, drink sellers and haunted houses are starting to aim（瞄准） adult customers only. There’s even an Halloween trade show in the US every year that you can’t even enter if you’re under 16.
