Is it your dream to fly and to work in space? Do you want to be a NASA astronaut? Like many jobs, the first thing would be to fill out the application. A record-breaking 18,300 people filled out applications recently when NASA announced it was filling its 2017 Astronaut Candidate program. But out of those 18.300 applicants, just eight to 14 will be hired by the U.S. space agency.
It will take 18 months to decide who will be in the new class of astronauts. NASA will review all of the files, which will later go to its current team of astronauts, to make sure they meet the basic qualifications.
The first requirement is the applicants must be U.S. citizens. They need a college degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics. They also need at least three years of experience in a similar field or at least 1,000 hours as a jet airline pilot.
There are requirements to pass a physical test. And then there are personality qualities tests as well. What kinds of personalities is NASA looking for in an astronaut? NASA’s Selection Manager Anne Roemer said, “I think leadership , teamwork, the ability to not only work on a team, lead a team, but also follow, be a follower on a team. Communication certainly plays a role, so it’s some pretty common skills that I think translate into even other professions.”
About 120 applicants will be invited to the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, for a first round of interviews, about half of whom will go back for a second round. Once selected, they must complete two years of training in everything about spaceflight-things like learning about all the systems used by NASA, walking in space and Russian language training. Some people are so rude!
Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says “Thank you”? Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?
Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.
In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello; E-mail, too, is slower than a text; Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect.
My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated, he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned his phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mails?” my sister asked. “Just text him.”
In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’ phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.
How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thank-you message. Others, like me, want no reply.
The anthropologist (人类学家) Margaret Mead once said that in traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern societies, the old can also learn from the young. BEIJING—More Chinese consumers prefer to make payments via smart devices as mobile apps have made purchases much easier, but security concerns remain, a PwC report said.
Nearly one-third of responders in China chose mobile payment when shopping last year, doubling from 16 percent in 2014, according to the accounting firm’s global retail (零售) survey. The figure appeared much higher than the world’s average of 12 percent.
The popularity comes as a result of rapid growth of mobile payment options and an expanding mobile network, the report said.
Chinese have started to enjoy a wide range of mobile payment options that allow faster, securer payment through near field communication and QR code. Moreover, more advances have been seen in biometric technology, such as the use of fingerprints and facial recognition.
“As competition becomes fierce, mobile payment players are trying to attract users through the continuous development of technology and business models,” said YuqingGuo, PwC China’s financial service consulting partner, adding that the technology is changing the way consumers assess and purchase products.
But security problems are rising. Data security was still seen as a huge problem, with leak of user information, payment fraud (诈骗) and virus attacks appearing as the threebiggest challenges for the rapid growing field. The PwC report said over 60 percent of responders were worried that their personal information was not safe.
Chinese government has introduced a series of policies to strengthen strict supervision (监督).In the meantime, people should avoid scanning QR codes from unknown sources and raise awareness of fraudulence.
The field still has vast space for growth due to technological advances and the rise of the tech-savvy younger generation, the report said, predicting China’s retail and consumer product industry will post an annual growth rate of 7.5 percent between 2016 and 2020.
