In the 1800s, the Rocky Mountain locust brought massive destruction to western settlers.
Then, the insects suddenly disappeared---almost without a trace. Now scientists hope to find a reason for the locust’s extinction.
What caused the Rocky Mountain locust to disappear? A scientist, Dr.Lockwood finds the answer. He spent over a decade investigating. He explains that it was humans who were in fact responsible for the extinction of the Rocky Mountain locust.More and more farms appeared in the river valleys to feed the miners. For working on the land, the farmers plowed up the fields and thereby stamped out thedelicate eggs that had been laid by the great swarm. By not allowing the eggs to mature into full-grown locusts, the species was entirelydestroyed when it was at its weakest when the insects were just eggs. The only extinction of a pest species inagricultural history was in fact an accident.

Humboldt squids, or “Red devils”, are some of the world’s largest animals without a backbone. These sometimes dangerous creatures live in the
deep waters of Pacific Ocean. They are fierce enough to attack sharks, and when disturbed or threatened, they’ve been known to be aggressive toward deep-sea divers.
A researcher，Gilly and a professional diver have come to the Gulf of California to learn more about them. They have done an interesting experiment: filming the squid using red light. They observed how the red devils hunt their prey: They’re coming in at full speed ahead, grab the prey, and full speed reverse. And leave the link. They have incredible intelligence.
Seeing the attack behavior of the Humboldt squid has helped Gilly to further understand something important about creatures that he’s studied for so many years.
