“Wow!” said Susan. “I have finished my homework and I’m going to paint a picture of our stairs. It’s for a competition in school tomorrow.”

“Do you need any help?” Mr. Cooper asked. “It’s almost time for bed.” “I’ll be quick,” said Susan. “I wonder what colour to use.”

“Well, our stairs are brown,” said her father. “Thanks, Dad.” said Susan.

When she finished her picture, Susan began playing with her brush which was still wet. Then something happened. She dropped the brush right on the picture! There in the middle of her picture was a blob (污点) of brown paint!

“Oh, Dad! What will I do?” Susan cried.

“My picture is ruined (污损). And it’s too late to paint another.”

“Let me see,” said her father. “The paint blob looks just like a spot on a dog. All you have to do is to draw a dog around the spot!”

“That’s a wonderful idea!” cried Susan. She drew a dog around the blob of brow paint.

“That looks just fine. You know, few things are as bad as they seem at first. With a little imagination you can turn bad into good,” said Susan’s father.

The next day Susan went to school early.

When the competition began, Mr. King said, “I’ve chosen three pictures, and I want you to say which one you like best. That picture wins!” The children did not like the first one. The next picture was on black paper, but the stairs were red. So it was not so good. Then Mr. King showed the third painting. It was Susan’s!

“The stairs are straight.” said Joe.

“Yes, and the brown paint shows up well on the white paper,” said Lucy. “And look at the little dog,” said Terry. “He seems to belong there.”

The children voted and Susan’s painting won. Mr. King handed her the prize—some paints.

“Susan had a good idea,” Mr. King said. “That little dog finished a good painting. It made the stairs seem real.”

Susan smiled. She would not give away her secret. But she could hardly wait to tell her father the news. He was right. With a little imagination you can turn something bad into something good! 29. Susan was going to draw a picture for ______.

There is no doubt that mothers play an important role in the lives of their children, but what about a father’s role? I believe fathers play just as important a role as mothers.

Fathers give us support. They are the shore we swim to when our arms and legs feel tired. They are the strength we depend on as we take our first steps into the world. Father can be gentle and powerful, but they probably have the simplest love we ever know.

For daughters, the father is the first man they admire and the first man whose eyes shine with happiness when they look at them. He is the first man to fall in love with them.

______, the father is their first hero and possibly the only man they will ever feel comfortable loving. For mothers, the father of our children is the person we can trust to watch over the babies as closely as we would. We are protected in the knowledge of their love. A father is the person on the planet with whom we can do whatever we want... one who will be just as interested and never feel bored in the face of our devotion.

Without fathers, we wouldn’t be mums. I would like to thank them honor all our hearts for this honor and for being our partners in the business of raising children. 32. From the passage, we can know the writer is a ______.

A. father B. mother C. son D. daughter 33. Which of the following can be put on the line in the third paragraph?

A. For parents B. For families C. For others D. For sons 34. According to the passage, we can know that ______.

A. fathers’ love is different from mothers’ B. fathers are always simple and strong C. fathers can look after their babies better D. fathers are more important than mothers 35. The best title for the passage is ______.

A. Father, I love you B. Fathers and mothers C. Fathers are our heroes D. The importance of fathers

What is time? Is it a thing to be saved or spent or wasted, like money? Or is it something we have no control over, like the weather? Is it the same all over the world? That’s an easy question, you say. Wherever you go, a minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 60 minutes, a day is 24 hours, and so forth. Well, maybe. But in America, time is more than that. Americans see time as a valuable resource. Maybe that’s why they like the expression, “Time is money.”

Because Americans believe time is a limited resource, they try to keep and manage it. People in the US often attend meetings or read books on time management. It seems that they all want to organize their time
