College Students’ Part-time Jobs

At present, there are an increasing number of college students who choose to take part-time jobs in or outside school. Some students work in the library, school stores or dining halls; others work off campus as tutors, salesmen, or saleswomen. Many teachers complain that fewer and fewer students are actively involved in their studies and some even abandon study entirely. Should we put the blame on part-time jobs? Should college students be forbidden to take part-time jobs?

It is true that taking part-time jobs may cause some problems. For instance, part-time jobs cut into students’ study time, which will inevitably affect their study habits. What is worse, some students even become so preoccupied with making money that they can’t focus on studying at all. In the end, they are likely to fall behind in class or fail their exams. However, just as the old saying goes, every coin has two sides. Working part-time also has some advantages. Firstly, it can help students promote their study to some extent. Their work experience will enable them to better understand what they have learned from books. It will also help them in their future job-hunting and make them well-prepared for their future full-time jobs. Last but not least, students, especially those who come from poor families, can partly relieve their families’ financial burden by taking part-time jobs.

It is hard to judge whether taking part-time jobs is good or bad. It depends on whether you can balance the relationship between working and learning. Balance it well, and you can achieve a lot from your part-time jobs. Otherwise, you are likely to do worse in school.

year.

weeks.

Q: Where may Peter’s father be? M: What seems to be the trouble, Ms. Li? W: I feel very dizzy recently and this morning I had some chest pain. Q: What is the possible relationship between the two persons? M: Why are you eating instant noodles again? Don’t you know preservatives are harmful? W: You bet I know, but what else can I find in the fridge? Q: Why did the woman choose instant noodles? W: I want to give up writing this novel; I’m sick of writing now. M: What? Passage One

When young people got their first real jobs, they may face a lot of new, confusing situations. They may find that everything is different from the way things were at school. It is also possible that they will feel uncomfortable and insecure in both professional and social situations. Eventually, they realize that university classes can’t be the only preparation for all of the different situations that arise in the working world.

Perhaps the best way to learn how to behave in the working world is to identify a worker you admire and observe his behavior. In doing so, you will be able to see what it is that you admire in this person. For example, you will observe how he acts in difficulties. Perhaps even more important, you will be able to see what his approach to day-to-day situations is.

While you are observing your colleague, you should be asking yourself whether his behavior is like yours and how you can learn from his responses to variety of situations. By watching and learning from a model, you will probably begin to identify and adopt good working habits. Questions 8 to 10 are based on the passage you have just heard.

8. According to the passage, why might young graduates not behave well in their first jobs? 9. What is the best way to learn how to behave in the working world?

10. Which of the following titles can best sum up the main idea of this passage?

Passage Two

In traditional education, teachers may feel that students are young and do not know very much about the world. They feel that they must tell students what to do most of the time. There is usually a list of specific things that students must do to finish the class.

In open education, teachers’ feelings are very different. They feel that students are individuals first, and students second. They allow students to decide what to study and how much to study. There are no traditional rules made by teachers. Students are allowed to discover subjects in the open classroom, instead of being made to study them.

There are some very good things about open education. It allows students to grow as people, and to develop their own interests in many subjects. It also allows students to be responsible for their own education. Some students perform poorly in a traditional classroom. The open classroom may allow them to enjoy learning. Some students are happier in an open education school. They do not have to worry about grades or rules.

But many students may not do well in an open classroom. Because open education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem getting used to making so many choices. For many students it is important to have some rules in the classroom. They worry about the rules even when there are no rules. Even a few rules will help this kind of student.

In my view, based on the above, open education is a good idea, but only in theory. What do you think?

Questions 11 to 14 are based on the passage you have just heard.

11. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true about traditional education? 12. Why do some students enjoy learning and become happier in open education?
