一、课程性质、目的与任务
本课程是英语专业的基础课。其特点是内容题材广泛，目的是使学生通过大量的阅读实践，掌握各种阅读技能，提高阅读理解能力和阅读速度，培养学生假设判断、分析归纳等逻辑思维能力，并通过阅读训练帮助学生扩大词汇量、吸收语言和文化背景知识，提高人文素养，增强学生的英语语感，培养学生的阅读兴趣，从而提高学生对语言的实际应用能力。
二、教学基本要求
要求能读懂英语国家出版的中等及以上难度的文章和材料，能读懂一般的文学原著，掌握所读材料的主旨和大意，抓住主要论点或情节。既能理解字面的意思，也能根据所读材料进行一定的判断和推论，既理解个别句子的意义，又理解上下文的逻辑关系，而且能对所读材料进行缩写或概括。教师在课堂教学中可通过分析所读文章，帮助学生加深理解，通过快速阅读训练来提高学生的阅读速度，扩充词汇的认知量和接触频度，增加文化背景知识，掌握阅读技巧，具有充分获得信息的能力，进一步提高学生的阅读理解力。掌握初步阅读技巧，并能用以解决实际问题。
本课程以课堂讲授的内容为重点和难点。通过具体的文章阅读，训练阅读方法和技巧。要求学生在规定的时间内，完成指定的阅读篇数。
考试以闭卷考试为主。考试范围涵盖所有讲授及自学的内容。综合测试学生的文化知识、阅读技巧、速度和理解准确率。根据平时的课堂表现、作业和期末考试成绩等来进行成绩评定（平时成绩占30%，期末考试成绩占70%）。
三、课程内容与学时分配
所用教材是杨立民等主编的《现代大学英语 阅读 2 (第二版)》（外研社，2007）。此教材共收集51篇带注释的英语佳作,体裁包括童话、寓言、故事、小说、戏剧、散文等，代表不同作家不同风格的作品。
本课程的重点是提高阅读速度，增强阅读能力。难点是不同体裁的文章的阅读理解，词汇量的增加，不同类型的篇章结构的把握。
该课程持续16周，每周2学时，共32学时。
