Are you addicted to computer games? Do you stay up all night playing them? Do you feel happy after you play computer games? There's no doubt that the excitement and appealing of games these days makes them hard to put down. More and more people are attracted by the choice when it comes to gaming: You can role play--creating your own fantasy characters and stories, giving you a chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and depression in violent situations where you kill people with guns. You can get excited from the games.

However, can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for us? Should we worry about their effects on our health? Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to causing acts of extreme violence. Internet safety advisor, Alan MacKenzie, thinks “many people understandably will just think that a game is just a game and not realizing the exact content that’s in there”. He gives an example of the violence, which he says is “wholly inappropriate for anybody, not to mention children.”

Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us. Some games are educational and using games certainly can help children learn good qualities. Studies have also shown that the skills used in playing games can cause growth in certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight.

Video gamers are also no longer just simple creatures. Just as Edward Smith, the professor in Oxford University, puts it that for some, gaming is having a positive effect on their social lives with games like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself.

So every coin has two sides. It seems today, gaming isn't just for game fans and if used in a proper way, we can all take part. If video games have two sides, what side do you stand by?

In the old days, you had to go looking for horrible news. Now, you can just wake up and glance at any social media site, and a lot of it will be waiting for you. That’s where Google Chrome extension Sadblock comes in. It helps you out by cleaning up sad, negative, and sometimes just plain annoying news from your social media feeds.

Sadblock will help you “take back control of your social feeds,” according to the extension’s website. It does this by allowing you to block certain types of posts from your social media. “Current categories include sad stories, political posts, climate change posts, and those that include common negative words,” the site says. You can download Sadblock for free from the Google Chrome Web Store.

The extension allows you to block these various kinds of content, and its multi-site approach appears to be different from other blockers, most of which exist for one service only and require you to add in your own blacklisted keywords. For example, Tumblr Savior allows users to filter(过滤)their Tumblr feed, but users must manually add words and tags they want to see blocked, like “death” or “violent.” Twitter application TweetDeck has a mute(静音) function, but also requires you to manually input words, phrases, and links you want banned from your feed.

Sadblock’s range allows you to block upsetting political content, or videos of abused animals, or stories about certain celebrities. At Sadblock we trust you already know the planet is struggling and that people all around the world are dying in terrible ways. Basically, Sadblock is intended to help people relax and take a mental relief away from the constant flow of horrible information. It’s not intended to help people ignore reality.

Psychologist Dr. Graham Davey told Huffington Post that “Negative news can significantly change an individual’s mood - especially if there is a tendency in the news broadcasts to stress suffering . Viewing negative news means that you’re likely to see your own personal worries as more threatening and severe, and when you do start worrying about them, you’re more likely to find your worry difficult to control”.

Sadblock does reduce what you see that’s troubling, but also unexpectedly deletes harmless posts and leaves a lot of distressing ones. And though the app is imperfect, it’s important to recognize that Sadblock is still an incredibly useful tool for people who need to continue to engage with social media and want to protect their mental health while doing so.

We often think of the need for critical(批判性的)thinking in the context of nonscientific approaches to extraordinary statements about the natural world. We call that pseudoscience(伪科学), and as a solution we often recommend more science course, especially those focusing on critical thinking. But critical thinking is not unique to the sciences. A study by two researchers at North Carolina State University, Anne McLaughlin and Alicia McGill, indicates that explicitly teaching critical thinking skills in a humanities course can significantly reduce students' beliefs in pseudoscience.
