Music is a language which speaks to everyone — from the day we are born we hear music of some kind of our lives. But there are as many different kinds of music as there are different languages, and it is impossible to describe them all. Here are just a few well-known types.

Classical music is serious Western European music from the Middle Ages to the present (1500 to today) and it was often written for a large orchestra, or for a small group of players. Many instruments can be used. A lot of music was also written to be sung — as opera. Classical music is very popular and schools often teach this type of music.

Jazz developed in the Southern States of North America at the beginning of this century. The black people of these states, who were originally slaves from Africa, had their own rhythms. Jazz brought classical music and African rhythms together.

Blues was originally black country music from the Southern States at the beginning of this century. It is slow, usually sad music which is often sung by one person with a guitar.

Rhythm and Blues (R&B) developed from the Blues in America in the 1940s. It became faster and more plex and used more instruments, eg. saxophone? (萨克斯), guitar, piano, drums. The music was often about city life and white musicians started playing it as well.

Many people say William Shakespeare’s writing is old, boring and difficult to read. However, that is simply not true. Even though Shakespeare wrote during the 1500s and 1600s, his themes are still relevant(切题的) today, and his writing is actually easy to understand if you take the time to break it down.

Shakespeare wrote many plays and poems that had excitement, suspense(悬念), edy, romance, and human drama. For example, Shakespeare wrote about teenagers hanging out with their friends, fairies playing tricks on humans, ghosts haunting(出没于) castles, suspenseful sword fights, and lovers dying in each other’s arms. Shakespeare’s writing also shows that people faced the same challenges and emotions in the Renaissance(文艺复兴) as they do today. For example, he wrote about a young man who had to prove to his father that he was responsible.

Shakespeare’s language is not too difficult to figure out if you have patience and focus on the words as metaphors(隐喻). For example, think about this quote: “Let every eye negotiate

for itself.” You know what all of those words mean individually, but you may not understand what they mean together. That is because he sometimes used words in a nonliteral(非直接的) way. Basically, Shakespeare is saying “Let each person decide for himself or herself.” He is saying that everyone should be able to make his or her own choices or judgments. This message is as relevant today as it was when it was written long ago. Whether you like edy or tragedy, action or romance, you may find that you can relate to Shakespeare’s stories more than you think. 28. When a leafy plant is under attack, it doesn’t sit quietly. Back in 1983, two scientists, Jack Schultz and Ian Baldwin, reported that young maple trees getting bitten by insects send out a particular smell that neighboring plants can get. These chemicals e from the injured parts of the plant and seem to be an alarm. What the plants pump through the air is a mixture of chemicals known as volatile organic pounds, VOCs for short.

Scientists have found that all kinds of plants give out VOCs when being attacked .It’s a plant’s way of crying out. But is anyone listening? Apparently. Because we can watch the
