A boulder(巨石), as big as a house. That’s how the guidebook described Giant Rock. Dad said it arrived here millions of years ago. I was finally going to see it, in snowshoes, with my two older cousins, my dad, and my uncle Don. I’d been snowshoeing before, and I liked the adventure of hiking through deep snow.

At the parking area, after putting on our snowshoes, we studied the map. Due to the geographical location, electrical devices were inaccessible here. The map was our only guide. \,\Dad said, \(小路). Then we turn left onto the purple road. That’s where Giant Rock is.\don’t wander off, guys,\

The trail ran uphill alongside a stone wall. It was easy to follow because red markers were nailed to the trees and the snow had been packed down by other hikers. At the top of the hill, we turned onto the purple trail. We settled into a pattern, with Dad and everyone else in front and me in the back, crunching(嘎吱嘎吱地踩) through the snow. I saw lots of animal tracks — mostly deer, squirrel, and rabbit prints. As the trail wound down, my cousin Andrew said what I’d been thinking:\Will we ever reach Giant Rock?\, \, do you think your dad invented this idea just to get us away from the TV for a while?\

Finally, we climbed a hill and saw the massive boulder sitting alone in the forest. It really is as big as a house! My cousins and I high-fived each other and jogged until we stood at the base, breathless. Standing in the boulder’s broad shadow, I noticed the sun had sunk lower.

\ head back,\back. Guys, keep up with the team.\Soon we were crunch-crunch-crunching our way home. I was a little behind the group when we approached a crossroads. And I noticed a set of animal tracks I hadn’t recognized before, so I followed them for a closer look. Paragraph 1:

I looked up when I suddenly realized how quiet it had

gotten.

Paragraph 2:

As going worriedly, I heard voices, someone calling far

away.

Alice had just been appointed in the multinational bank. After one month of severe training, today was her first day to go to work.

She got up a bit earlier than usual, and decided to skip her gym workout as she did not want to risk being tired or getting late to her office on her first day. She went through her morning routine and spent a lot of time in selecting what to wear. None of her dresses seemed to appeal to her — they were either a little too casual or too dull and she definitely wanted to make an impression right from the start. Finally she settled on a white embroidered(刺绣的) dress.

She waved bye to her mom and set off cheerfully towards the bus stop. But she saw a bus leaving the stop just as she crossed the street. Now she would have to wait for a good 15 minutes. 15 minutes passed and then 30 minutes and there was no sign of the bus. \,\a kind lady who was also waiting for the bus told her. Hearing that, Alice got anxious. She had to reach her office on time. Then she saw a taxi approaching but when she tried to stop it, the taxi driver sped by without even taking a glance at her. Alice was wondering what she could do.

It was then that a car stopped near her and a man waved to her. The driver asked her where she was going and after Alice told him that she was going to the bank at Nariman Point, the man said, \, my office is in the nearby building. Can I give you a lift?\got into the car. They exchanged names and began to talk for a while. Then the driver switched on the radio and was absorbed in the song. Alice looked out of the window and imagined her first day at work, worrying whether she was capable of the new job, and if she could get along well with her colleagues. After about ten minutes, Alice realized they were not on the familiar route to her office. Paragraph 1:

She began to worry that she might get into the car of a bad

man.

Paragraph 2:

Then the car turned around a corner and Alice saw the tall building where her office was unexpectedly.

At noon that day, I drove back to my house after the performance. Just as I entered the living room, I heard a gentle sound coming from the bedroom upstairs — it was the sound of my favorite violin.

\!\

I dashed upstairs. Sure enough, as expected, a boy of about 12 years old was petting my violin. The boy had messy hair and a thin face, his oversized coat seemingly filled with something. At first glance, I found a new pair of shoes missing. It seemed that he was surely a thief.

Then, I saw his eyes full of fear and despair. My anger was immediately replaced by a smile. I asked, \you Mr. Ram’s nephew, Michael? I’m his housekeeper. Two days ago, I heard his nephew living in the countryside will come. It must be you. You’re really like him!\

On hearing my words, the boy was first astonished, but then quickly said, \my uncle gone out? I think I’d better first go out for a walk and visit him again in a little while.\

I nodded and asked the boy who was preparing to put down the violin, \violin so much?\

\, but I’m so poor that I can’t afford it,\

\, I give this violin to you.\The boy looked at me questioningly, but he picked up the violin. Going out to the living room, he suddenly saw on the wall my huge color photo in which I performed in the Sydney Opera House. He involuntarily trembled for a moment and ran out without looking back.

I was sure that the boy had understood what happened because no one would decorate the living room with the housekeeper’s photo. Paragraph 1:

A few years later, I was invited to be a judge at a music competition of senior high school students.

Paragraph 2:

After the competition, \, holding a violin

box.

Growing up on a small farm, I lived a life that I took for granted. My father worked in the city as a plumber(水暖工). He was not highly educated, but he was smart, looking at problems in an engineer’s way. He was a man made of leather, brass and chewing tobacco who tried to teach my brother and me useful things, including respect. He also had a temper and was strict with us for he would scold us when we made some careless mistakes. Sometimes, my father seemed like a distant enemy to me and I didn’t like him very much.

One day I came home from primary school and his car was already there. Once inside, I was told by my mother that he didn’t feel well. His back hurt. My father never missed work; in fact, when he came home, he often went to the barn to work. I once looked at him secretly around the corner as he lay on his bed in the middle of the day.

Later, my mother told me he got multiple myeloma(多发性骨髓瘤), a type of cancer. As the cancer grows, the person will shrink because the disease destroys the body’s energy and the abnormal antibodies cause problems for other cells and tissue. Bones eventually look like Swiss cheese, and when they break, they may never heal. But I didn’t realize that my father’s time was rather limited and just treated him the same way I used to.

For the last year of my father’s life, his entire day consisted of rising from his hospital bed in the living room and walking to his chair to sit and think. He was predictably on that bed when I came home one day during the ninth grade. I do not remember where my mother and brother were, but the two of us were alone. Paragraph 1:
