believe it.

When we were walking up all the stairs I started talking to another boy who didn?t know anyone. He said his family had moved from Hong Kong over the summer. He seemed really nice so we sat together when we got to our classroom, out of breath! He said his English was very poor but I thought it was really good.

We spent all morning with Mrs. Black looking at our timetables. Everyone in the school has a different timetable—can you believe it? Half of the school is learning Spanish as a second language and the other half learns French. I?m in the Spanish group, which sounds like fun. I?m worried that I?ll forget my timetable and go to the wrong room! How will anyone help me if nobody else has the same timetable as me?

Lunchtime was OK. After lunch we started lessons. I had maths, which was complicated and difficult and then history, where we started to learn about ancient Greece. That looks interesting. I have to do some homework tonight to find out how the ancient Greek people lived.

So far so good. I?m quite looking forward to tomorrow, even though I?ve got science. I hate science!

Overweight seems to be a national trouble. Diets, books on dieting, dieting organizations, and advice from doctors and health professionals do not seem to be enough. Millions of people have turned to dangerous drugs or harmful diets to starve off their hunger. The meat industry and the fast-food restaurants have more to do with America?s weight problem than anything else. Each day we are filled with powerful TV and radio ads promoting (推介) the idea that it?s perfectly OK to have bacon and eggs for breakfast, hamburgers and French fries for lunch, and fried chicken and French fries for supper.

Is there a healthy diet that people can use to lose weight and keep themselves slim and fit forever? There is indeed. But it requires removal of meat, fish, and milk products from the diet forever.

A healthy diet-and-exercise regimen (养生之道) is actually pretty simple. That is to cut meat, fish, and milk products out of the picture completely (and I do mean completely).

* Do not eat any meat, fish, eggs, or milk products. No cheese, no ice cream, no pizza, and no butter.

* Eat only low-fat, and low-sugar foods. Eat fruit (in reasonable amounts) for desserts. * As much as possible, avoid drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, or cola.

* Use soya drinks instead of milk. Soya drinks are high in protein and generally fairly low

5

in fat.

* Eat cereals, grains, bread, and pasta in reasonable amounts (with no cheese, but always with high-protein foods).

* Jog or fast-walk at least one mile per day. If you are unused to this level of exercise, start with smaller distances and build up to a mile.

It has been known for years that it is possible to get all the protein we need from high-protein vegetarian foods. Many restaurants now serve vegetable-protein meals, such as veggie-burgers or refried bean tacos and burritos; be sure to ask for them without cheese or sour cream!

59. The underlined words “starve off their hunger” in the first paragraph most probably mean ______.

A. satisfy their need of losing weight B. wish for being slim C. make themselves feel hungry D. slow down the feeling of hunger

60. The meat industry and the fast-food restaurants have more to do with America?s weight problem because ______.

A. they make powerful ads on TV and over radio B. they convince people to eat more food rich in fat C. they fill people with the idea to have bacon and eggs D. they make people take dangerous drugs or harmful diets 61. To keep slim and fit, the author thinks it better ______.

A. to change the picture of meat, fish, eggs, or milk products B. to eat cereals, grains, bread, and pasta as much as possible C. not to eat any meat, fish, eggs, or milk products D. not to take soya drinks high in protein 62. From the passage, we can infer that ______.

A. it?s healthy to jog or fast-walk at least one mile every day B. high-protein vegetarian foods don?t have all protein we need

C. it?s inappropriate to ask for veggie-burgers without cheese or sour cream D. proper foods play a very important role in keeping healthy

What a Little Love Means to a Little One

For too many, the damage begins early in life. Four out of 10 infants(婴儿) born in the United States do not form a strong bond(关系)with either parent, and they will pay for that the rest of their lives.

New research from Princeton University confirms what other researchers have already found: The number of babies born into

families that are too poorly equipped to give them a fair chance of having a successful life is extremely big.

That finding is supported by many other research projects, including a study from the University of Rochester showing that nearly one-third of U.S. parents don't know what to expect from their newborns, or how to help them grow and learn and get along with others. Babies, as others have pointed out, don't come with an owner's manual.

The basic problem, according to the Princeton study, is 40 percent of infants in the U.S. live in

6

fear or distrust of their parents, and that will turn into aggressiveness(侵犯), defiance(挑衅)and hyperactivity(多动) as they grow into adults.

Of that number, 25 percent don't bond with their parents because the parents aren't responding to their needs. And a tragic 15 percent find their parents so troubling that they will avoid them whenever possible.

That will not necessarily result in a lifetime of violence, but it will make living a successful life much more difficult.

“They can overcome it,” sociologist Sophie Moullin of Princeton, lead author of that study, said in a telephone interview. “It's not a make or break situation, but they might find it harder to control their behavior.”

Moullin, along with coauthors from Columbia University and the University of Bristol in England, analyzed more than 100 research projects, to reach their conclusions.

Many factors contribute to the problem, including poverty(贫穷), ignorance(无知), and stress among parents who are so busy with their own problems that a new child is sometimes more than they can handle.

Yet strong bonds, the researchers say, are amazingly simple to achieve.

63. According to the writing style of the passage, it may be a(n) _______________. A. argument B. news report C. essay D. debate 64. Which of the following is NOT true?

What is the meaning of the underlined word “manual”? A. An expert who tells you how to take care of a baby. B.A TV show that tells you how to bond with your baby. C. A book that tells you how to do or operate something. D. A radio program explaining how to look after your baby. 66. What may be discussed in the following paragraph?

A. Simple ways of achieving strong bonds with an infant. B. Examples of the consequences of lacking strong bonds. C.Findings of other similar project concerning this topic.

D. Reasons for failing in building up strong bonds with a child.

The light from the campfire brightened the darkness, but it could not prevent the damp cold of Dennis?s Swamp (沼泽地) creeping into their bones. It was a strange place. Martin and Tom wished that they had not accepted Jack?s dare. They liked camping, but not near this swamp. “So,” Martin asked as they sat watching the hot coals. “How did this place get its name?” “Are you sure you want to hear it? It?s a scary story,” warned Jack. “Of course!” cried out Tom. “If there were anything to be scared of, you wouldn?t have chosen this place!” “Ok, but don?t say I didn?t warn you,” said Jack, and he began this tale. “Way back in time, a man called Dennis tried to start a farm here. He built that cottage over there to live in. In those days, the area looked quite different ---- it was covered with tall trees and

7

the swamp was a crystal-clear river. After three hard years, Dennis had cleared several fields and planted crops. He was so proud of his success that he refused to listen to advice. “You are clearing too much land,” warned one old man. “The land is a living thing. It will hit back at you if you abuse it.” “Silly fool,” said Dennis to himself. “If I clear more land, I can grow more crops. I?ll become wealthier. He? s just jealous(妒忌的)!” “Dennis continued to chop down trees. Small animals that relied on them for food and shelter were destroyed. He was so eager to expand his farm that he did not notice the river flowing slowly towards his door. He did not notice salt seeping to the surface of the land. He did not notice swamp plants choking all the native plants.” “What happened?” Martin asked. It was growing colder. He trembled, twisting his body closer to the fire. “The land hit back ---- just as the old man warned,” Jack shrugged. “Dennis disappeared. Old folks around here believe that swamp plants moved up from the river and dragged him underwater. His body was never found.” “What a stupid story,” laughed Tom. “Plants can?t…” Before he had finished speaking, he screamed and fainted (晕倒). The other two boys jumped up with fright, staring at Tom. Suddenly, they burst out laughing. Some green swamp ivy (常春藤) had covered Tom?s face. It was a while before Tom could appreciate the joke.
