Hello, boys and girls, listen carefully and try to fill in the blanks of the given chart. Recently some researchers did a survey about which word or phrase is most annoying to English speakers.
It is “whatever”. Nearly half of Americans —47 percent—said they found “whatever” the most unwelcome word in everyday life; 25 percent said they found “you know” most annoying; 11percent couldn’t stand “it is what it is (就是这样)”; 7 percent would like to take “anyway” out of all conversations; and 2 percent said they could do without hearing “at the end of the day”.
But some readers said the survey didn’t include all the unpopular words and phrases. Here are some of their opinions.
“Like” is often used among American teenagers. In some cases it is used in place of “say” or “said”. Sometimes people use “I was like” instead of “I said”. At other times, the word “like” has no meaning at all.
Another reader wrote “I think next year’s No. 1 most annoying word will be ‘look’. President Obama uses it as a sentence opener far too often. That’s not the worst thing a president could do, but now half the country is doing it. It’s driving me crazy!”
When people use “look” in a conversation, they want to raise the attention of the listener. Another reader said the word “basically” has driven him mad. “It has become the new ‘um’ or ‘you know’,” he wrote.
