I would tell my husband we should give him food for the little dog. It wouldn't have been a problem; we have our own “mini farm” of animals! But he would say “OK!” and then blow the idea off because__of our business. Being in Phoenix, Arizona, you can just imagine how hot it gets here, but its winter was really chilly! I had just come from KFC with take-out food for dinner. As I was turning by the canal, the man was sitting on a long bench, wrapping himself with an old__brown__coat and even older scarf. Even the dog had a worn-out woolen vest on! Not even thinking more about it, I pulled into the parking lot along__the__canal and piled up a plate of chicken with all the fixings for the man and his little dog as well as a cup of hot coffee and a bottle of juice. Looking at all the hot and delicious food and drink, he said, “Thank you, sweetie. You are an angel.” And he was a little moved and I found tears welling up in his eyes! I told him he was so welcome, and then went home.

When my husband dug into the KFC bag, he asked, “Were you hungry, or what happened?” I told him what I did and he said, “Only you!” Then he told me I had done a good thing. Since there had been nothing left in the KFC bag, we decided to go out to have our dinner. By the time, we wanted to pay our bill, I couldn't find my wallet. I really didn't know where I lost it. Luckily, there was not much money in it, and I forgot it at once.

Cody looked around. No other men were fishing anywhere around the lake. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by the firmness in his father's voice that the decision was final. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water. The creature swished its body and disappeared. The boy sighed at the loss of such an awesome fish.

Do we do right when no one is looking? Do we stop at the red light when the street is empty? We would if we were taught to “put__the__fish__back” when we were young. It is a story worth telling to our children and grandchildren. It is not about how we take advantage of someone or something, but about how we resist a big lure when no one is watching. 2.

Just as I wondered, Mama appeared. Mama spoke for only a few minutes on the telephone,__asking questions like “when?” and “how?” Then she woke up my elder brother__and__sister. In a few seconds the whole house was buzzing with some sort of news. “At eleven o'clock.” “…too young to be dead.” I heard these phrases, but I couldn't put together their meaning.

Mama came then with a serious look on her face. She told me he was dead in the hospital. My daddy was dead? No! It wasn't true. He was tired but he couldn't die. He had kissed me only that afternoon. People didn't die just like that! People only died when they were old…very old with grey hair and wrinkles. Not people I knew…not anyone I loved. Not my father! He was mine and no one could take my father away from me. He would live forever.

“Folks,” the minister said to the huge crowd of people in the restaurant. “We have a happy couple who met and almost fell in love with each other at the first sight five years ago on this day, so they chose today to have their wedding in spite of the terrible weather, but they were blocked on the way to their wedding. Since all of you cannot leave, why not hold the ceremony right here? All we need is someone who would be willing to give the bride away. So do I have a volunteer?”The restaurant manager put up his hand as soon as possible.

Half an hour later, Michael and Millie appeared in front of the audience , hand in hand. The hearty rounds of applause were heard here and there. The folks kissed them ,and gave them their best wishes. The restaurant manager was very excited as if he were the actor of an action film and saved the whole world. He walked through the crowd and said to everybody, “Please drink free coffee. It's my treat today! 10

This is the first wedding held in my restaurant, and it is I who gave away the bride.”

Then Risha stared at the crumpled ball. It reminded her of a snowball. Suddenly an idea struck her. Why not create a winter wonderland out of crumpled paper? Risha didn't have to draw or paint or even cut. Risha made many paper balls, glued them all together, and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman. The snowman wore a hat made of black paper and even a scarf made of red paper. Her finished project was really wonderful. On Friday, Risha carefully carried her project into the library. She noticed the smiles and the nods from teachers and other students as she put her work on a table. Ms__Clay walked over to Risha. “You have created an amazing piece of artwork. I am so proud of you!” Ms Clay said. Risha was proud of herself too. Her pride grew when Ms Clay placed a first-place star on her artwork. “Maybe I am a good artist after all,” Risha thought.

It did not take him a long time to find Truc's house. After Truc quitted__school he got a piece of land from his grandparents. Through hard work and his knowledge about land, Truc was able to turn his luck into success in ten years and became well off. But he forgot the promise of the__old__days. When Tung appeared in front of his house, Truc was shocked. He tried his best to show his hardships of his life to stop Tung's asking for money, never knowing this friend was a city officer then. Tung was treated to a small dinner and left.

What happened in Mai's house was quite different. Still as an__ordinary__person,__Tung arrived at Mai's house just as before at Truc's, but he was warmly welcomed by the poor couple, who were still living in poverty. In order to serve the guest, Mai's wife sold her fine black hair to buy a basket of food. Now you could know the three old friends were really going separate__ways.

One day I suggested that he should start on homework before dinner. John , who used to turn a deaf ear, said, “You're right. I guess I will.” When I mentioned this to one of his teachers and remarked that I didn't know what caused the change,__she said laughingly, “It must be his coat!” Another teacher told him she was giving him a good mark not only because he had earned it but because she liked his coat. At the library, we ran into a friend who had not seen John for a long time. “Could this be John?” he asked, looking up to John's new height, and extending his hand, one gentleman to another. John and I both know we should never mistake a person's clothes for the real person within them. But there is something to be said for wearing a standard of excellence for the world to see, for practising standards of excellence in thought, speech, and behaviour,__and for matching what is on the inside with what is on the outside.

A week later, I was waiting my friend on the bank of the canal. It was much colder, and I was a little impatient. Suddenly, I found somebody waving and calling “angel”to me. I recognized him almost at once, because only he once called me “angel ”. He was walking to me, slowly but excitedly, with his little dog. He asked me whether I lost a wallet when we met last time. I was not sure until he took a wallet carefully from his inside pocket of that old__brown__coat. I nodded and he smiled like a child. I had a chat with the old man. We were walking along__the__canal and he told me that he found my wallet after I left and guessed it must have been taken out with that bag of food by accident. But he didn't know my name and address and didn't find any clue in the wallet. So he could do nothing but wait here every day, because he believed that I would come one day. Hearing this,I was completely moved and knew who was the real “angel ” !the three old friends were really going separate__ways.
