Abstract

Abstract: Edgar Allan Poe, 19th century American poet, novelist and literary critic, as one of the pioneers of the originator of the modern detective stories and science fiction, The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe is a great tale of mystery and macabre. It is a representative work of Allan Poe. And this essay is to achieve four goals: firstly, readers will become more familiar with novel The Black Cat and Allan Poe by the brief introduction to the plot of the novel and the author; secondly, they will know romanticism, symbolism and gothicism in this story more clearly after analyzing the narrative method; thirdly, this essay will help readers get thorough understanding of Allan Poes great writing skills via the study of the main characters in the fiction: the master, the wife of the master and two cats. At last but not the least, at the end of the thesis, a summary of the theme of The Black Cat will be showed, which is about the cause of some abnormal psychology, the importance of love and classification of love.
