In what ways has global warming affected our world? Rising sea levels, melting glaciers(冰川)and extreme weather are just a few examples. But did you know that global warming can also bring other, less obvious long-term changes? Making insects hungrier

According to Science Daily, when it is warmer, insects’ body temperatures go up along with the outside temperature. This is very different from humans and other mammals,

who can keep their body temperature at a certain level without being affected by the weather.

Higher body temperatures can increase the insects’ metabolism(新陈代谢). This makes them hungrier, so they need to eat more. In addition, increasing temperatures also make insects breed(繁殖) more quickly.

Helping scientists find historic sites

Britain had a very dry and hot summer this year because of global warming, the Independent reported. After the dry weather turned the country’s green landscape yellow, people noticed some unusual patterns(图案)in the middle of a field. That’s because grass that grows above historic sites has a different color and height from other grass. This helped people see the patterns.

After studying these patterns, scientists found Neolithic(新石器时代) monuments (纪念碑)and a Roman farm.

25. How will global warming make insects hungrier? A. Because they will grow as big as mammals.

B. Because their metabolism will increase as temperatures increase. C. Because they need more energy to stay alive at higher temperatures. D. Because only large insects can live in high temperatures. 26. Thanks to the hot weather, people in England found______.

A. new landscapes B. grass with different colors

C. some unusual patterns in a field D. an ancient country under a field 27. What can we infer from the story?

A. Global warming is happening more quickly. B. Global warming is not a problem at all. C. Scientists are happy with global warming.

D. Farmers will face problems caused by global warming.

Is there a difference in meaning between “It’s too late to make a telephone. Mary is asleep now.” and “It’s too late to telephone. Mary will be asleep now.”?

Yes. The difference is in the reason given for it being too late to telephone. In the first

sentence “Mary is asleep now”, the speaker is stating a fact. In the second sentence “Mary will be asleep now,” the speaker is saying what Mary usually does. In fact, it’s possible that Mary isn’t asleep, but she is usually asleep at this time.

So let’s take two situations. In the first case, imagine Mary’s mother answers the telephone. You: “May I speak to Mary, Please?”

Mother: “No, it’s too late. Mary is asleep now.” You: “Are you sure? It’s only 10 o’clock.”

Mother: “Yes. I went to her room and she was asleep.”

The mother knows that Mary is asleep because she went into her room and saw her.

Here is another case. Two friends decide to telephone Mary. Jack: “Let’s telephone Mary. It’s 10 o’clock.” Jill: “No, it’s too late. She will be asleep now.”

Jill knows that Mary always goes to bed before 10 o’clock, so now she’ll probably be asleep. But it is also possible that she is staying up late. 28. In the first situation, Mary’s mother _______. A. is afraid to wake up Mary

B. wants to tell you that she knows Mary is asleep C. knows that Mary wants to sleep at this time.

D. wants to know if she can take a message for Mary 29. In the second situation, Jill______. A. knows that Mary has gone to bed B. doesn't know that Mary is asleep

C. is sure that Mary cannot answer the telephone

D. thinks it's likely that Mary cannot answer the telephone

30. According to the teacher, in which situation do you think the word “will” is used in the same way Jill uses it?

A. It's too heavy. I think I'll help you.

B. Don't get into his office. He will be angry now.

C. You won’t have to come to my office. I will send it to you. D. Will you please carry the bag for me?

C When young people begin to live alone, home-hunting can be difficult. But they would do well to remember that a new choice is available --- micro-homes.

Fondly called “tiny houses”, these houses have all living necessities in a small package,

including kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Generally under 50 square meters, most tiny houses can hold just one or two people though some claim the space for more. What's lost in size is not lost in design as these homes are often quite modern in design.

Besides an attractive appearance, tiny houses can also have practical features. Making the best of urban space, the 72-to-122-centimeter-wide Keret House in Warsaw, the world's narrowest home, filled in an alley. The home Ecocapsule uses solar power, wind power and rainwater collection to enable its owner to live practically anywhere.

Although micro-homes are attractive, there are a few disadvantages to consider before getting comfortable on a minicouch. Moving into a tiny house, you should throw away

unnecessary things. It is also mostly impossible to invite guests. And finally, a micro-home is likely a temporary(暂时的) living choice for most people since they will probably start families and own more things.

Though the limitation will scare some, there is usually a benefit. A small size results in low prices and small bills, making tiny houses easier to save up for. And though you won't have many things around the house, it makes it easy and simple to keep it clean. Micro-homes are also eco-friendly, which can't be matched by other homes. They probably aren't for everyone or forever, but when it comes to your next (or first) home, they could be just what you need. 31. What can be learnt about micro-homes from Paragraph 2?

A. People can't take a package into the tiny houses.

B. All of the houses can hold more than two people. C. These houses are good in design though tiny in size.

D. Such houses are poorly designed because of the small size.

32. Micro-homes are especially suitable for ______.

A. a young person who has many things B. a person who doesn't have much money

C. a couple who want to protect the environment D. a family hoping to settle down in a city 32. What can be the best title for the text?

A. East or west, home is the best. B. Micro-homes --- more than tiny! C. Home-hunting --- no easy matter! D. Tiny or large, this is a choice.

Rosemary sat at her kitchen table, working a crossword puzzle. Crosswords were nice. They filled the time, and kept the mind active. She needed just one word to complete this morning's puzzle. The clue was “a Swiss river”, and the first of its three letters was “A”. Unfortunately, Rosemary had no idea what the name of river was, and could not look it up. Her atlas(地图集) was on her desk, and the desk was in the guest room, currently being occupied by her grandson Victor.

Looking up over the tops of her glasses, Rosemary glanced at the kitchen clock: It was almost 10 a.m. Land sakes! Did the boy intend to sleep all day? She noticed the pain in her wrist again, and put down her pen. Anyhow, at 87 years of age, she was glad she could still write at all. She had decided long ago that growing old was like slowly turning to stone. You couldn't take anything for granted. She stood up slowly, painfully, and started walking to the guest room.

The trip, though only a distance of about 25 feet, seemed to take a long while. Rosemary arrived at the door to the guest room. It stood slightly open, and she looked through the opening. Victor lay sleeping on his side, his arms bent, his expression slightly pained. Get up, lazy bones, she wanted to say. Even in childhood, Rosemary had never slept past 4 a.m.. There was too much housework to do. How different things were for Victor's generation! Her youngest grandson behaved as if he had never done any housework in his life. Twenty-one years old, he had driven down to Florida to visit Rosemary in his shiny new car, a gift from his dear parents. Victor would finish college soon, and his future appeared bright —if he ever got out of bed, that is. Something Victor had said last night over dinner had disturbed her. Now what was it? Oh yes, he had been talking about one of his college courses —a “gut”, he had called it. When she had asked him to explain the word, Victor had said it was a course that you took simply because it was easy to pass. Rosemary, who had not even had a high school education, found the word unpleasant. If she had been allowed to continue her studies, she would never have taken a “gut”.

The memory flooded back then, still painful as an open wound all these years later. It was the first day of high school. She had graduated from grammar school the previous year, but her father had forbidden her to go to high school that autumn, saying she was needed on the farm. After much tearful begging, she had gotten him to promise that next year, she could start high school. She had endured a whole year of chores instead of books, with animals and rough farmhands for company instead of people of her own age. Now, at last, the glorious day was at hand. She had put on her best dress (she owned two), her heart racing hopefully. But her father was waiting for her as she came downstairs.

“Where do you think you're going?” he asked. “To high school, Papa.”

“No, you're not. Take that thing off and get back to work.” “But Papa, you promised!” “Do as I say!” he thundered.

There was no arguing with Papa when he spoke that way. Tearfully, she had to drag herself upstairs to change clothes. Rosemary still wondered what her life would have been like if her father had not been waiting at the bottom of the stairs that day, or if somehow she had found the strength to disobey him...

Suddenly,Victor moved slightly, without waking, and whispered something unintelligible(莫名其妙的). Waken from her daydreaming,Rosemary stared at Victor. She wondered if he were having a nightmare.

34. By saying “if he ever got out of bed” (Para.3), Rosemary thought Victor was ________. A. too tired to get up B. promising but lazy

C. impolite to oversleep D. old enough to help with housework 35. Why did Rosemary dislike Victor's use of the word “gut”? A. Because it showed that Victor didn't take education seriously.

B. Because it recalled Rosemary’s memory of her grammar school classes. C. Because it showed that college courses were too easy to pass.

D. Because it meant that Rosemary didn’t have high school education. 36. We can know from the passage that _______. A. Rosemary’s father is still alive

B. Rosemary valued education very much

C. Victor was a hardworking and friendly young man D. Victor visited his grandmother every year

37. The passage as a whole is mainly about ________. A. whether Rosemary will go up to wake Victor up B. Rosemary's fight to keep painful memories C. Rosemary's care on Victor's study

D. whether Rosemary should fight for her schooling chance
