An essay consists of three kinds of paragraphs. The support paragraphs form 1. the middle or body of the essay. These support paragraphs offer 2. points of proof that the thesis statement is valid. Each support paragraph begins with a topic sentence that 3. relates the point to be made in that paragraph to the thesis of the essay.
