Ever since I was a child, my mouth has caused me trouble. I'm not a bad person.I have just had a hard time learning when to keep my mouth closed. My mom has told me again and again, “Robert, your constant bad words are hurting me. If you continue to be rude, you will get into big trouble.”

It's been a problem at school several times too, when teachers have told me something I didn't want to hear. I used to feel it was my duty to stand up for myself and tell them off. One day in the English class I began working on my homework until I heard a classmate talking behind me.It was Nathaniel, talking to himself as usual. I said ever so nicely,“Nathaniel, would you be quiet?”Nathaniel continued talking to himself. I quickly shouted, “Nathaniel, shut up!”

For the next five minutes, we threw hurtful words back and forth at each other.

“At last I don't have an ugly lazy eye like you!” I shouted. I knew it would hurt his feelings and shut him up.

What I said filled him with anger. He tried to reach over my seat and grab(抓住) me as he shouted, “That's it! That's it!”

Surprised at his reaction, I sat back in my seat. Never had I seen Nathaniel act like this before.

Later on, we were taken to the principal's office. There, the principal told us to discuss the matter. It wasn't until then that I finally found that when I hurt someone physically(身体上), the wounds eventually heal(become healthy again). But when I hurt them with my words, sometimes the pain never goes away. At the end of the discussion, I said sorry to Nathaniel.

When I headed back to my room, I spent some time praying(祈祷). I began to think about how often what I said hurt others. But I believe that as I keep praying and asking God to help me and he'll tell me when to keep my mouth closed.

Learning Money Management

When 12yearold Hayley Flomen received a generous amount of cash for her birthday, she knew exactly what she wanted to buy: a pair of Lululemon pants that her mom wouldn't buy because they were too expensive.

“We went to the store together,” remembers Hayley's mom,Andrea, “and she changed her mind. When it was her own money, she felt they were too expensive, after all.”

That story pretty much sums up why young teens should have some cash of their own—not for lunch or movies, but money to do with as they see fit. Because you don't really understand what it means to pay $100 for a pair of pants, until it's your $100.

“Kids get excited about receiving money because it gives them the opportunity to make their own purchasing decisions,” confirms Jeannie Stamkos, branch manager of the Yonge and Eglinton CIBC in Toronto. “Young teens have a heightened interest in money, which means there is a need for parents to educate them.”

A weekly or monthly allowance is a common way to give kids ongoing experience with handling money. But Stamkos has other suggestions:

Help them plan. “If there's a bigticket item your child wants,” says Stamkos, “help him figure out how long it will take to save for that, based on the allowance he's being given and how much he can put aside each week.”

Help them earn. Point out opportunities kids might have to earn extra dollars, whether through odd jobs at home, babysitting or a paper route.

51.The reason why mother and daughter gave up buying the pants is that ________. A.the money was a valuable gift B.the pants are expensive C.the pants were sold out D.they chose a cheap pair
